Full Description

Grade I listed house, now a school, dating from the 14th century, altered in the 15th century, remodelled in about 1760, raised and extended in the early 19th century and added to in about 1910. It is dressed stone and brick, with stone dressings and gabled and hipped slate roofs with four brick side wall stacks, plus a medieval round side wall stack. For the full description of this listed building please refer to the National Heritage List for England. {1} A foundation trench and the remains of a limestone wall were recorded in July 1992, during trial trenching at St Mary's School Pottergate. The wall was thought to form part of the remains of the former east range of the school, demolished in about 1764. Several demolition layers overlying the foundations were found to be rich in limestone/mortar fragments and mid 12th to mid 15th century tile, suggesting that the east range was possibly constructed earlier than had previously been thought, or that it had been constructed using re-used materials. {2}{3}
