Full Description

Grade II listed bandstand, dating from 1884 and presented by FJ Clarke. It is cast-iron, with an ashlar plinth and a domed zinc sheet roof with finial. It is octagonal with a plinth inscribed with the names of the City wards and of the Borough Surveyor. It has twisted cast-iron columns with filigree brackets. For the full description of this listed building please refer to the National Heritage List for England. {1} The bandstand at the Arboretum dates from 1884 and it was donated by the Oddfellows friendly society whose brass bands had played regularly in the park. The Oddfellows contributed £175 and in recognition of this the names of the contributing lodges of the friendly society were inscribed into the base of the bandstand. The stone plinth is also inscribed with the name of the then Mayor, F. J. Clarke and the borough surveyor, R. MacBrair. {2}
