Full Description

Former corn exchange and covered market building, now in use as a variety of retail spaces. Built in 1879 in an Italianate style to the designs of Bellamy and Hardy, after the previous Corn Exchange building was deemed too small (see MLI93783). Converted in the late 20th century. Built of brick with stone dressings, iron piers and joists. Features slate and lead roofs with two gable stacks and three gabled ventilators. The southern side had the original main entrance bay, being of three storeys with a very steeply-pitched pyramidal roof with a flat top and wrought-iron crest. Towards the roof is an inscribed datestone with the City Arms below.
