Full Description
A public house dating to the late 17th century, the building, which is in red brick with a pantile roof, was substantially altered in c.1840, with a minor addition in the 20th century. The main block is on two storeys, with a four bay front which includes an off-centre door covered by a timber porch. All windows in the facade are sashes with flat brick arches. To the left, there is a lower, two-storey, two-bay addition featuring windows with segmental brick heads. A date of 1762 is painted over the door of the building. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1}
The Crown Inn was the subject of historical research in October 2015, when an assessment of its significance was produced to inform its proposed conversion to housing. The building is thought to have originally been built in the late 17th century as a private house, but had been in use as a public house since at least 1839. The majority of the structure is built of red brick laid in a Flemish bond, with a later northern extension being laid in English Garden Wall bond. The building has had a number of phases of alteration, particularly to the interior, where most of the fittings date to c.1950. Significant portions of the original plan form remain, however, particularly in regard of the ground floor lobby and principal rooms. {2} After this proposed conversion to housing the house was for sale by September 2016 and by November 2021 was in residential use. {3}{4}
