Full Description
Farmhouse and former public house dating from the early 19th century. Built of red brick with stucco dressings, and features a pantile roof with raised brick-coped tumbled gables and two gable stacks. Of two storeys, with a three-bay front having corbelled out eaves, and a central panelled door with plain overlight, flanked by single glazing bar sashes. To first floor are three similar windows. All the openings have segmental heads and splayed stucco lintels. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate entry in the National Heritage List for England. {1}{2}
The building was known locally as the Bridge Inn, during its operation as a public house. The building is thought to have functioned as a more informal 'beer house' type of establishment, holding a pre-1869 Beerhouse Licence, though it is not known exactly when it opened. The beer house formally closed in May 1952, after the renewal of its licence was refused, following an unsatisfactory inspection by the police earlier that year. The inspectors found the beer house to be unclean, untidy and uninviting, with no beer pumps and no space for visitors to sit. It was clear that few people, if any, had visited the premises in the year previous to the inspection. The building has remained in private residential use since the beer house closed. {3}{4}{5}
