Full Description

A former school, now closed, and house, built in c.1860, probably by S. S. Teulon. They were constructed of red brick with burnt header diaper work and have a steeply pitched slate roof with brick kneelers and stepped verges, with wrought iron finials. Theer are triangular headed chamfered doorways with ashlar scrolls over which are inscribed 'Girls' and 'Boys School' respectively. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} White's 1872 Trade Directory states that the National School and teacher's residence were built in 1860, at a cost of £600, paid for in part by government grants. It capacity was said to be 120 pupils, but attendence was half that in 1872. This building replaced two schools built in 1839 for this parish and North and South Elkington. {2} Both buildings are shown in their current T-shape plan forms on the 1888, 1906, and 1951 OS maps of Welton le Wold. The school appears to have closed at some time before 1975, when the school was put up for sale along with the schoolmaster's house. {3}{4}{5}{6}
