Full Description

A transmitter tower for the Chain Home radar station of RAF Stenigot (see MLI43220). Stenigot was one of twenty sites along the east coast of Britain which had been chosen as 'Advanced' stations by September 1937. This station was a 'Type A' site, and was modelled on the standard layout established at Bawdsey Experimental Station. The transmission and receiving of radio waves were essential functions of radio direction finding equipment (radar), and the operation of both were based in buildings surrounded by blast walls for defence against air attack. Construction began in 1938, with the transmitter and receiver blocks (see MLI93441 and MLI93442 respectively) and towers complete and operational by 1939. There were originally four towers, aligned at an angle to each other, rather than the square on arrangement that was more usual on these sites. The transmitter towers were 210 feet (64m) apart, centre to centre. It is only the southernmost of these towers that survives, standing to its full height of 360ft. The tower stands on four concrete pads, and is built of bolted galvanised steel girders, with steel ladders and platforms. The tower survives largely intact, although the topmost of its working platforms have been removed. It has been said that these platforms have been stored within the nearby transmitter block.
