Full Description

A curved crescent of shops and houses which are now six houses. The buildings were constructed in 1823 for John Parkinson of red brick with hipped slate roofs and underwent alterations in the 20th century. The crescent was built to house the workers who were employed by John Parkinson in his factory for weaving crepes and bombazines. Parkinson is said to have obtained permission soon after 1816 to lease from the Crown a tract of fenland situated between Revesby and Boston. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} The 'Old Coach House' part of the Crescent (comprising the north central part of the terrace) was the subject of historical research in 2014, when an assessment of its significance was produced. It appears that The Crescent was not built in one phase, and it is possible that the central 3 storey building was originally constructed in 1821, when a local Tuesday market was established in the village. The flanking 2 storey structures to both sides of the central structure appear to be slightly later additions, likely dating to 1823, as indicated by the datestone set in the left hand addition. The structures were initially used as housing with shops to the front, and the Old Coach House part is listed as being used by the Twelvetrees family of grocers and drapers for large parts of its history. {2}
