Full Description

A barn dating from the 17th century which underwent alterations probably in 1818. It has a timber frame and is a mud and stud building which has been weather boarded. It has a pantile roof. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} The mud and stud threshing barn was recorded in March 2012 prior to conversion to a shop. The barn has, over time, been modified significantly. Originally of three bays it has had lean-to aisles added on both sides at different times since it was originally built. The barn is of typical mud and stud construction with riven ash laths nailed to rails and earth walling to a thickness of 13 to 20 centimetres. The walling material is an earth/straw daub. Only four mud and stud barns are known to survive in Lincolnshire. The timber frame largely survives along the north and the south walls. The original frame would have included four principal frames dividing the building into three bays. The inner two frames survive in their entirety, while the outer frames have been modified to take the newer structures of the west and east walls. The timbers are elm which is relatively rare for Lincolnshire mud and stud. The bracing for the main frames is an unusual form of ladder bracing with two parallel braces between the tie beam and post that has not been found in any other building locally. The barn was originally built on a foundation of field-stones bedded in an earth mortar. This foundation was well built under the south wall, but elsewhere, where the ground is at a higher elevation, the structure of the barn was simply erected on pad stones. This might have been done because the building stands on a slope with the stone plinth under the south wall acting as a retaining wall to bring the interior level of the barn up to a level. Later, with the addition of the west and east walls, sections of the barn were underbuilt with a brick plinth and it is probable that the present brick floor was added to the barn at this time. It is possible that major work on the barn took place in 1818 as the date was recorded on a timber beam by David L. Roberts and is recorded in the listing designation. The building was re-roofed in the 20th century and in 2011, major structural repairs were made. {2}
