Full Description

A former parish church, now ruined, dating from the 11th century which was constructed of coursed chalk rubble with greenstone dressings and facing to chancel. The tower and nave walls survive in part up to about twenty feet and contain some herringbone masonry. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} In the late 1950s a resident of Belchford retrieved a carved stone head from the ruins of Calceby church. When he died, in 1969, his wife moved to Ingoldsby to live with her daughter's family and took the head with her. This lady passed away in 1983. In 2014, Mr Peter Harden of Ingoldsby (the son-in-law of the couple from Belchford) contacted the City and County Museum and deposited the head with the museum. The carved head is approximately 15cm high, 12cm wide and 10cm deep. It appears to have residues of modern cement-based (rather than lime-based) mortar on the reverse with a 13mm drilled fixing hole on its reverse. It is a corbel from the medieval church of St Andrew at Calceby. {2}
