Full Description

A farmhouse dating from the early 19th century which was constructed of red brick and has a hipped pantile roof with a single elaborately twisted brick ridge stack. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} The front of the building, with two rooms downstairs and two rooms above and with a baffle entry, may have been the extent of the original building. There is also a combined central fireplace for these rooms which together would suggest that the building has an early plan form, which parallels late 16th and early 17th century plans. At that date, where the fireplace was put depended on the size of the house. In small cottages of two rooms it was naturally put in the centre of the building. The twisted chimney tends to be seen in higher status buildings of Tudor date. It is extremely unusual in a vernacular building. The general plan form of the building, in particular, would suggest that the original date for the building may perhaps be earlier than the early 19th century. {2} Ashleigh Farm, Theddlethorpe St. Helen. Partially extant 19th century farmstead. Regular courtyard of L plan. The farmhouse is detached from the main working complex. There has been a partial loss (less than 50%) of traditional buildings. Isolated location. Large modern sheds are located on the site. {3}
