Full Description

Mid 19th century milepost on the A17 at Algarkirk, to the east of the junction with Waste Green Lane. It is triangular in plan, and made of cast-iron. It is inscribed with the makers name 'HOWDEN & SON, BOSTON, 1835' in the top panel, 'SLEAFORD 19 MILES' and 'HOLBEACH 7 MILES' in the respective side panels, and 'ALGAKIRK' at the base. {1}{2} The milepost was inspected as part of a condition survey of historic milestones in Boston Borough, conducted in early 2020. It was found to be in a relatively good condition at that time, with only limited signs of rust. {3} The milestone could be clearly discerned on the older Google Street View imagery for this area, but could not be seen on the latest imagery (August 2021), indicating the post has likely been very recently removed or destroyed. {4}
