Full Description

An auger survey was undertaken in November 2005 prior to the demolition and extension of the Engine Shed and its associated buildings, Lincoln. The survey was laid out along a east to west transect along the axis of the Engine Shed. The cores revealed upper deposits consisting of recent and post medieval dumps and made ground deposits associated with the construction of the railway yard and industrial developments in the 19th century. Discarded core finds included post medieval pottery, clay pipe, brick/tile, coal, oyster and mussel shell, a post medieval leather shoe, animal bone, an iron object and slag. Lower deposits were of organic silts. {1}{2}
