Documentary sources reveal that a school was built in Witham Green "near the Grand Sluice" in 1842 by the congregation from the chapel in High Street. Later "commodious school-rooms" were added for around 100 children, from any denomination, who were provided with a free education. A chapel was built at a later date and appears in the Census of Religious Returns of 1851. The exact site has not been established.{1}{2}{3}
