Full Description

Although planned for several years from the mid 1850s, it was not until 1864 that the Billingborough and Horbling Gas Company was established, with the aim of providing gas to users in both villages. This location at the eastern end of Vine Street was chosen for the site of the gas works, with construction starting in the second half of 1864, and the first gas being produced in November of that year. Production at the site stopped with the closure of the works in January 1935. Many of the former works buildings have since been demolished, although the former manager's house is still extant (see MLI125805). {1}{2}{3}
