Full Description

The Caistor gas works was established on this site off Horse Market in 1855, with the aim of providing gas to users in the town. The Caistor Gas and Coke Company was registered on the 1st February 1856, with construction on the site being completed and the delivery of the first gas to street lamps in the town on the 2nd of February. Initial demand for the gas seems to have risen slightly after the works were established, with new gas tanks and holders thought to have been constructed in 1878. Production then seems to have stabilised at about 2 million cubic feet of gas produced each year until 1938, when 3 million cubic feet of gas was being produced annually. The works were nationalised in 1949, becoming part of the East Midlands Gas Board. Production at the site is recorded to have stopped at some point in 1956 or 1956, and all of the former gas works buildings appear to have since been demolished. {1}{2}{3}
