Full Description

The Tattershall and Coningsby Gas and Coke Company was established in 1860, with the aim of providing gas to users in both villages. This location on the north bank of the River Bain, close to Butt's Bridge, was chosen for the site of the gas works. Construction work commenced in the second half of 1860, with the works being completed in early 1861. Gas was piped for the first time to streets and shops in the two villages on the 7th of February that year. Five miles of gas pipeline had been laid by 1931 to supply the nearby users. Production at the site stopped with the closure of the works in 1940. Many of the former gas works buildings were damaged in March 1943, when Avro Lancaster WF4175 crashed on the site (see MLI125799). Any surviving buildings were removed when the site was cleared in 1948. {1}{2}{3}
