Full Description
The Sutton Bridge gas works was established on this site to the north of Bridge Road in 1864, with the aim of providing gas to users in the town. The Sutton Bridge Gas and Coke Company was registered on the 6th of October 1864, with construction on the site being completed and the delivery of the first gas to street lamps in the town in early 1865. The Church of St Matthew was one of the first recipients of gas from the new works, with the fitting of gas lamps and supply of gas finished by the 11th of May 1865. Initial demand for the gas seems to have risen steadily after the works were established, with new gas tanks and holders thought to have been constructed prior to 1903. Production then seems to have stabilised at about 4 million cubic feet of gas produced each year from 1911 until the last known records of 1931, with three miles of gas pipeline having been laid by 1938 to supply the nearby users. The company was amalgamated with the Long Sutton Gas and Coke Company in 1941, to form the Long Sutton and Sutton Bridge Gas Company, with the Sutton Bridge site being closed at some point soon afterwards. Most of the former gas works buildings have since been demolished, though some wall fragments still survive to the rear, along with what is thought to have been the former gas manager's house and office, though this is much altered, having later been used as a Post Office. {1}{2}{3}{4}
