Full Description
The Zion New Connexion methodist chapel and Sunday School, formerly in West Street, are mentioned by several sources and a photograph survives. It was built in 1828-9 with the addition of a school in 1831 (prior to that, in 1827, the group met in a room in Angel Court). Later extensive alterations were made to the chapel front after a fire in 1859 and in 1898 a new school was built. In 1934 the New Connexion, having suffered a decline in membership, joined with the congregation from the Iron chapel in Brothertoft Road in the new chapel in Brothertoft Road (see PRN 13965). The chapel was subsequently sold and a cinema was built on the site. The surviving photograph shows that the chapel had a pedimented façade of 2 storeys and 3 bays. The upper tier had 3 round-headed windows with keystones and the lower tier a round-headed doorway, in a slightly projecting central bay, between 2 square-headed windows. The site is marked as a cinema on the 1968 OS 1:2500 map. A commercial building is now (2008) on the site. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}
The plot of land is now (2014) vacant and used as a carpark. {6}
