Full Description
PRN 13970
The building now used as an Assemblies of God Pentecostal chapel in Station Street is marked as a store on the 1968 OS map (on the same map a Pentecostal Assemblies of God chapel is marked in Liquorpond Street, in what may originally have been the Ebenezer Particular Calvin Baptist chapel, since demolished). The site appears to be vacant on an OS map of 1887. The extant building, which lies at the corner of Station Street and Tower Street, appears to have been a nonconformist chapel. It is constructed of red brick with gault brick dressings and has a gabled roof with raised gables, which have stone copings and kneelers, and a slate covering. The gable facing Station Street is surmounted by a stone cross on a gault brick stack and has an upper window in the gable which retains its original glazing. The other window and door frames have been replaced in plastic and reglazed with modern stained glass. The moulded eaves and gable cornices are of gault brick as are 2 string-courses at the levels of the window heads and sills, the upper one of which is projecting and outlines the ashlar stone lintels of the flat-headed openings. The windows have rolled mouldings on the arris. Above the door is a raised gable with stone copings and kneelers. There is a lower gabled cell to the rear with a corrugated iron roof. The lower courses of the building are rendered.{1}{2}{3}{4}.
