Full Description
The former Skirbeck Wesleyan Methodist chapel and school in Freiston Road were built in 1876 but are no longer in use (2008). The former address was Church Road, Skirbeck, Boston. The gabled building is constructed of red brick with gault brick and stone dressings and a slate roof covering with decorative ridge tiles and finial. The gable is raised and has stone copings and moulded stone kneelers (the same details are found in the gabled porch). The pointed lancet windows, which have gault brick dressings and stone sills, are boarded up but a photograph in Leary shows that the central window over the porch has 2 lights and gothic geometric cusped tracery with a stone hoodmould and stops. The gabled front has 3 bays of windows and a triangular shaped opening, all dressed in gault brick, and a central projecting gabled porch.The porch window also has cusped tracery and the doorway set in the side of the porch has a caernarvon arch. The bays of the gabled front and side elevations are divide by stepped buttresses. Those on the side elevations have stone cappings and those on the front have small gabled cappings. There is a string-course composed of a double row of gault bricks in the central bay of the front and also in the porch and a brick plinth. A lower gabled cell to the rear, or "chancel", has a separate south east entrance and may have housed the school mentioned in documentary sources. {1}{2}{3}{4}
