Full Description

Eleven pottery sherds, of five different types, were found during trial trenching at 10 James Street, Lincoln, in June 2008. The sherds date from the 13th to 15th century. Also recovered were seven sherds dating from the mid 15th to late 17th century and 37 fragments of medieval tile. All of the artefacts were residual. {1}{2} A subsequent watching brief at 10 James Street, conducted between September 2009 and February 2011, revealed a layer, containing 13th to mid 15th century pottery, cut into by a limestone wall. The construction cut for this wall contained 13th to early 14th century pottery, residual Roman pottery, animal bone and iron nails. Overlying the wall was a cobbled surface which was sealed by a demolition deposit containing medieval, limestone rubble and mortar and 13th to early 14th century pottery and a later 18th century topsoil. This dating can provisionally be tied to the known history of Burghersh Chantry House that stood on this site. The earlier stone structures may represent outbuildings built at the same time as the main house, in or around 1345, and demolished at the time of its rebuilding in the eighteenth century. {3}{4}
