Full Description

PRN 13963 The former Baptist chapel has been used in recent times by a tarpaulin manufacturer though it is not clear if it is still in use. Some documentary sources suggest that the chapel was built in 1801 though another records that it was rebuilt in 1839. A school room was built sometime before 1856 and is probably represented by the building to the rear of the chapel which is now linked to it. The chapel is marked as disused on the 1968 OS map. The chapel is constructed of red brick though the side elevations, and the lower courses of the front elevation, are rendered. The building has a mansard roof. The parapet on the front elevation, which has 3 bays, appears to be a later addition and does not appear on an engraving published in 1856. Immediately below the parapet is a course of dentil brick and a row of paterae which is repeated by another row of paterae forming a string-course at the level of the window imposts. The round-headed windows have projecting keystones and arched glazing bars with stained glass. The engraving shows similar windows but without the keystones and with intersecting gothick glazing bars. The doorway has also been altered: the door surround in the engraving has columns with elaborate capitals and architrave whereas the extant round-headed doorway has a stepped arch and projecting imposts. The chapel is linked to the probable former schoolroom behind by a flat-roofed modern extension. The school is a gabled red brick building with gault brick cornices and string-courses. The side elevations have 3 bays of square-headed windows. Any former openings on the gabled front have been obscured or removed by the insertion of garage doors. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6}{7}
