Full Description
PRN 13962
The former chapel and school are now both in use as business premises. The first chapel on West Street was built in 1865 when a former chapel in George Street became inadequate. This first West Street chapel was destroyed by fire in 1897 and the extant building was constructed in 1898. The last service was held in 1965 and it was subsequently sold. The school was constructed behind the chapel, at right angles to it and facing onto Trinity Street, in 1903. The chapel is constructed of red brick with gault brick dressings. The gabled façade has been completely altered below the pediment but the original façade, of three bays of round-headed windows and square-headed doors separated by tall pilasters, can be seen in a surviving photograph. The pedimented gable partially survives and retains a semi-circular stepped recess. The sides of the façade are faced with gault brick. The principal side elevation has a corbel table of gault brick and 2 tiers of windows separated by tall brick pilasters. The upper tier has round-headed windows with glazing bars, gault brick dressings and cast iron balconies. The Lower tier has segmental-headed windows which have been altered and reglazed. It has a plinth of gault brick. The school is a 2-storeyed, gabled, building constructed of red brick with string courses of gault brick. The roof is coverd with modern tiles. The 3 windows of the upper tier have round heads, with painted stone arches and sills, and glazing bars. The openings at ground level have square heads but the central opening has been replaced by a modern doorway.{1}{2}{3}
