PRN 47177 The former Technical Institute is a substantial Edwardian building, now used as offices and a day care nursery. It is considered to be of townscape interest by the Louth Conservation Area Appraisal. {1} A two storey red brick building in English Bond with a five bay front elevation, under a hipped roof of slate. Decorative corbelling below eaves. A protruding front gable encompasses a small porch, and a coat of arms on the gable end. A stone sign above the door reads 'TECHNICAL INSTITUTE.' {2} The building was erected on the former grounds of Ivy House, James Street, in 1897. It became the home of the Girls' Grammar school in 1903 before that moved to Westgate, and in 1929 it became an annexe for Monks' Dyke School. It is labelled as a 'Technical Institute' on the 1906 OS map of Louth. {3}{4}
