Full Description

The existing school building is an attractive and prominent feature of the street scene. It is considered to be of townscape interest by the Louth Conservation Area Appraisal. The 1st edition Ordnance Survey map shows a 'British School' building on the site, which was built in 1841. {1}{2} A large two storey buff brick building in English Garden Wall Bond with a twenty four course two-tiered plinth, and a protruding front gable, under a pitched gabled roof of slate. The gables are parapeted, with concrete coping. It has a nine bay front elevation with large 15 light sash windows. The front gable bears a decorative date stone reading 'altered 1929'. The rear range, added to the building later, is in the same style as the principal range, though it is built of red brick and is less grand in appearance. Several modern buildings and extensions have been added to the site. {3} The school was opened in 1841 at a cost of £1000, £450 of which was provided by the government, and a further £150 by the town council. Within a couple of years its attendance had grown to 160 boys and 150 girls. By 1855 the attendance had outgrown the original buildings, and the school was enlarged with the addition of the rear range at a cost of £230, to provide for 400 boys and 260 girls. The school can be seen on Brown's Panorama of 1844 without this range. {4} By 1872, attendance had dropped again, to 125 boys and 135 girls, possibly due to the appearance in Louth of a number of other schools providing education for both infants and juniors. {5}
