Full Description
A Wesleyan Methodist chapel and Sunday School are indicated on the 1905 County Series map. The first chapel was built in 1806 and was replaced by the Commonide Chapel 1814-15. It was also known as Chapel Lane Chapel. It was enlarged in 1871 and closed in 1999. Planning permission for conversion of the former chapel to 4 flats, and for the demolition of the annexe, was granted in 2006. The former annexe to the north has been demolished but the conversion of the chapel appears to be abandoned. The former Sunday School on the opposite side of the road was demolished and an extant house named "Chestnuts" was built on the foundations in 1903. A subsequent Sunday School was rebuilt and opened in 1969. The former chapel is of red brick with polychrome segmental windows and door arches of alternating pale stone and black brick with stone keystones on the front elevation. A polychrome roundel in the gable contains a circular date tablet 'enlarged 1871'. The east wall has 2 tiers of segmental-headed windows and the upper tier of tall windows has arched glazing bars and central panels of original stained glass with art nouveau style floral designs. The gabled front has clasping terminal pilasters and 2 intermediate pilasters with stone caps. The gable cornices have dentil brickwork which is of black brick in the front gable and red brick in the east gable. The lower two thirds of the extant building are of darker brick and appear to represent an older building subsequently enlarged above, and to the west, presumably corresponding to the tablet in the gable. The chapel built in 1815 may be represented by the older phase of the present building. {1}{2}{3}{4}
