Full Description
PRN 55549
Yellow brick Victorian villa house with ashlar dressings, built in 1872 for the Sandars family at a cost of £2815. The house was known as North Sandsfield House, and the Sandars family resided there until 1907 when they moved to Gate Burton Hall. The Sandars family were a wealthy and prominent family in Gainsborough, owning the brewery there. They also owned breweries elsewhere in the country. The house became the Girls High School in 1920 and is now part of Queen Elizabeth's High School. It has been extended and altered during the 20th century, however the building survives largely in its original form and many original internal features survive (2008). These include staircases, fireplaces, doors, windows, skirting and coving. At least one outbuilding (PRN 55551) and part of the wall of a probable walled garden (PRN 55552) also survive. Original plans and drawings from 1872, showing the house and its grounds and outbuildings, are held at the Lincolnshire Archives. {1}{2}
