Full Description
PRN 65338
A Primitive Methodist chapel was built on the south side of West Gate in 1814. {1}{2}
The site was visited in 2009. Primitive Methodists first met in Sleaford in 1838 in a house in New Quarrington Long Row and then in a house in Westgate near Playhouse Yard where a Sunday School was held on the first floor. The extant chapel was built in 1841 with a ministers house included, under the same roof, at the back. The Sunday School at this time was held under the gallery. Later, possibly around 1870, the minister's house was incorporated into the chapel and a new schoolroom was built at the rear. In the early 20th century this chapel became inadequate for the growing congregation and in 1907 a new chapel was built nearby in Westgate. This chapel closed in 1964 when the society united with that in Northgate. It was subsequently demolished and the present telephone exchange was built on the site (PRN 65670). The surviving chapel of 1841 is built of red brick and has a gabled roof with a pantile covering. The pedimented front gable is raised with stepped stone copings and a finial at the apex. The front elevation is rendered and has two tiers of round headed openings, the lower tier much altered with new doors and windows. The upper tier has three bays of recessed round-headed windows with margin lights. A rectangular date stone with a date of 1841 is set within the gable. The side west elevation has four bays of round-headed windows with margin lights in the upper tier, and small flat -headed windows with margin lights, set within shallow round-headed recesses, at the lower level. A small circular opening is visible in the upper level of the east elevation. The rear gable has evidence of various former openings, now blocked. A gabled schoolroom is attached behind.{3}{4}{5}{6}
