Full Description

PRN 65336 The Wesleyan Methodist chapel on North Street was built in 1848 in yellow brick with Ancaster stone dressings, with an adjoining school room and vestries. The architect was James Simpson of Leeds. {1}{2} The site of the demolished chapel was visited in 2009. The chapel was built on the site of the Old Falcon Inn in Northgate, which was purchased for £1,500, to replace the chapel in Westgate when that chapel became too small (PRN 65622). It was repaired and beautified in 1867 and had further alterations in 1885. The chapel was demolished and replaced by a new chapel between 1969-1972. In 1897 the old ministers house was demolished and replaced by a new building which still survived in 2009. The Church Hall survives. In 1902 a mission chapel in Grantham Road was proposed but never completed. A photograph of the demolished Northgate chapel survives and shows that it had a three-bay front with central and lateral doors and a large Perpendicular 3-light window in the projecting central bay with projecting quoins at the angles.{3}{4}{5}{6}
