Full Description
Former Baptist chapel on Eastgate, named as The Temple, and built in 1881. The chapel was built for a group of Particular Calvinist Baptists, who were ministered by Edward Samuel and had previously worshipped at the chapel off Boston Road (see MLI91734). It is not certain exactly when the congregation ceased worship here, and the building has been used as a piano showroom since 1996. The building was constructed of red brick, with ashlar dressings, and has a gabled roof with slate coverings and ornamental ridge copings and a terracotta finial. The three-bay gable front has a slightly projecting central bay with a flat-headed doorway and a large pointed window above, set within a pointed stone arch with zigzag decoration, resting on stepped buttresses with stone cappings. The flat-headed doorway has a pair of original doors with decorative iron hinges, and a margin light above, surmounted by a rectangular stone tablet inscribed 'THE TEMPLE'. The two lateral bays have pointed windows with ashlar arches, glazing bars and coloured margin lights, and terminal setback buttresses. The side elevations have four bays of flat-headed windows with ashlar heads and sills and glazing bar sashes with coloured margin lights and etched glass. The bays are separated by stepped buttresses. There is a lean-to annexe to the rear and a small blocked triangular-headed opening in the rear gable. A foundation stone is dated 1881. An iron side gate survives. {1}{2}{3}
