Possible Roman house at Monson Street, Lincoln

Protected Status/Designation

Full Description

PRN 70614 A polychrome tessellated pavement was discovered at 2 Monson Street in the 19th century. Excavations at 2-3 Monson Street in 1982 also revealed 'intensive occupation' during the Roman period. This site is known as the 'Monson Street Villa'. {1}{2} During trial trenching at 9-11 Monson Street, a large quantity of 3rd century pottery (and some residual late 2nd century sherds) was recovered from a deposit. There was a large proportion of fine wares compared to kitchen wares, and Spanish amphora sherds were recovered. Oyster shells were also found. It seems likely that this deposit represents waste from a high status occupation site. {1}{2}
