Full Description
Mental hospital, now a museum, meetings and entertainment centre. Built 1820, by Richard Ingleman of Southwell, with late 19th century additions. Extensive restoration and conversion 1989-90, with additions including conference hall to central quadrangle. Yellow and red brick, with stucco front and gabled and hipped slate roofs. Classical Revival style. The Lawn is important in the treatment of the mentally ill because Edward Parker Charlesworth and Robert Gardner Hill here pioneered the treatment of patients without physical restraint, between 1831 and 1838. This principle was adopted at the influential Hanwell Asylum from 1839. {1}
The Lawn, an asylum at Lincoln, was established by the physicians and surgeons of the County hospital to care for patients of educated and cultured backgrounds with modest means. Richard Ingleman, architect of the Nottingham County Asylum, drew up the plans for the new building around 1818. {2}
Built as the lunatic asylum in 1819-20 by Richard Ingleman of Southwell. Under restoration at the time of writing (1989); it is no longer a hospital, and its future use is undecided. The main front faces south and is cement faced. High centre block, fibe bays, three storeys, with a giant Ionic portico (not part of Ingleman's design). On the portico wall a mounting range of Vitruvian openings. Low wings to right and left with two bay wings brought slightly forward. {3}
