Full Description
PRN 37083
Cottage hospital of 1874-75 by R Adolphus Came at a cost of £6,176 on a site donated by Earl Brownlow. A children's ward was built in 1888, a nurses home was added in 1903, two new wards were added in 1922 and the X-ray equipment was added in 1931. The maternity wing was added between 1931 and 1935, during this period the site became a General Hospital. The original mortuary block and cottage built to house the isolation ward have not survived. The hospital is of a relatively large size for a cottage hospital and has the institutional architectural charateristics of a larger hospital rather than the domestic design of a cottage hospital. The interior of the original building has been altered and features such as fireplaces and doors have been removed or replaced. Some original features survive including the staircase, handrail and cast-iron balustrade. The layout of the entrance hall, matron's sitting room, operations room, nurses' kitchen and store remains unchanged.{1}
At Grantham R Adolphus Came freely adapted a basic pavilion plan to create a picturesque elevation for the cottage hospital built there in 1874-75. The wards were T-shaped, an unusual arrangement which was commended as novel, pleasing and noteworthy by Burdett, who thought they presented a cheerful and airy appearance 'which fills the visitor with much pleasure'. However, the plan did not have many imitators.{2}
