Full Description

Ashlar and brick art gallery by Sir Reginald Blomfield, constructed 1926-27. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} The gallery was built to house the Usher Collection and paid for with money from the same bequest. Sir Reginald Blomfield was invited to design it and the foundation stone was laid in March 1926. The building was opened by the Prince of Wales on May 25th 1927. The gallery remained relatively unchanged until the late 1950s when the Curtois Extension was added, paid for by another bequest (from Ella Curtois). An additional extension was added in the 1970s, funded by a further bequest (from Sir Francis Hill). The gallery is a relatively complete and well-preserved example of Blomfield's smaller scale work and although it is "not an architectural masterpiece" it is still a good civic building of its period. {2} A building survey recorded details of three 20th century extensions, the Coin Gallery, the Curtois Gallery and the 'administrative bungalow' prior to their demolition. The Curtois gallery is the oldest, constructed in 1959 following a bequest by a local artist. It is situated to the south of the main gallery, and is connected to it by the Coin Gallery which was added in 1974 to house the coin collection of Sir Francis Hill. The 'administrative bungalow' is a single storey separate building to the south of the extensions built in 1967 as a caretaker's house. It was converted into offices in 1990, and has been disused for several years. {3}{4}
