The Walton Gardens housing estate on the south side of Springfield Road has a direct link with the town's programme in the mid 1930s to encourage other industry to come to the district. This council house estate was specifically built to house families moving up from Rochester and Peterborough when the new 'Aveling Barford' company was formed and located in the town.{1}
