Alongside the pavement can be seen the abutments of what was once a railway embankment. Built in the early 1840s, this was the entry point into Grantham of its first railway link to Nottingham. Up to the left was the town's first railway station and its sidings handled most of the freight traffic which had previously been carried by the Grantham to Nottingham Canal.{1}
