Full Description

PRN 37050 An imposing array of pipes, valves and other gizmos which is all that remains today of the former Grantham Gas, Light and Coke Company's gas works, which for over a century supplied Grantham's houses, street lighting and industries until natural gas and electrification sealed its doom. Founded in 1833. In its day, coal came in from the Nottinghamshire coalfields by a railway siding from the Old Wharf Road end of the Nottingham line and canal water was a useful source of process and cooling water.{1} The Gas Works, at Earlsfield, on the canal bank were established in 1833. The building underwent enlargement and improvement in c.1856 and in 1892. {2}
