Mainline railway station. Once the London to Edinburgh line was up and running, Grantham became one of its most important junction stations. Grantham was often the first stop after leaving King's Cross (London) and when the expresses came to a halt, passengers and mail were quickly unloaded. The passengers crossed over to adjacent platforms where connecting trains were waiting to speed them, the mail and other goods, away on branch lines for "all stations to Nottingham, Lincoln, Sleaford and Boston".{1}
