Full Description

PRN 70597 A peat deposit underlying made ground was encountered during trial trenching. A radiocarbon date was obtained from a piece of waterlogged wood found in the peat and this suggests that the peat deposit began forming during the late Bronze Age or early Iron Age. This bog environment may have persisted as late as the 12th-13th century. During the 15th-19th centuries, this land was reclaimed by the dumping of successive layers of waste. This sequence corresponds to historical references for the northern extension of the Sincil Dyke during the 15th century, and the consolidation of this area of the Wigford suburb afterwards. This site was not occupied until the 19th century. {1}{2} Similar deposits were seen on the other side of the river during monitoring of geotechnical boreholes. A possible prehistoric ground surface was identified at the base of the sequence, and a peat horizon of possible Bronze Age/Iron Age date was seen in one borehole. These deposits were overlain by a series of flood deposits, the latest of which contained early medieval pottery. These deposits were in turn sealed by medieval and post medieval ground raising deposits. Traces of a possible building were seen above these in one borehole. {3}{4}
