Full Description

Hexagonal shaped water tower, built of red brick in 1897-8, to the designs of engineer Henry Riley. At the ground floor level there is a marble plaque recording the construction of the tower and those involved. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} The tower and adjacent reservoir (see PRN 56599) were the subject of a heritage statement, produced after a site visit and historical research was conducted in 2013, to inform proposed conversion and development of the site. The tower represents a striking and well-preserved example of municipal architecture, built to provide safe drinking water for the growing town of Gainsborough. The structure retains its original external appearance, including its fenestration, roofs and some of the original floors and staircases. The original water tank also survives, with much of the interior pipework also in situ. {2}{3}
