Full Description

PRN 55489 Late 18th or early 19th century 4 storey red brick house with modern shop front. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} This is a tall late Georgian building with a three bay front that Pevsner notes in 1989 was very neglected. {2} In 2011 the Lincolnshire Heritage at Risk survey noted that the building was in use by the local newspaper, the Gainsborough Standard. It was in reasonable condition at that time. {3} Originally the east side of the Market Place consisted of one continuous four-storey red-brick facade with a constant roof-line and regular repetition of similar architectural features, particularly windows and doors. Today [c.1985] the only surviving section is nos 5-7 Market Place. It is of four storeys in red-brick with a Welsh slate roof, brick stacks at the gable ends, moulded cornice and bands at the cills. In the original terrace these features will have emphasised the continuity of the whole terrace. {4}
