Full Description
PRN 65257
Millthorpe was an extinct hamlet in the parish of Quarrington, mentioned in the early 14th century. Its location is not known. {1}{2}{3}
The name Millthorpe is of Old English and Old Danish origin and means "the secondary settlement with a mill". {4}
Millthorpe is listed in the Lay Subsidy of 1334, when its wealth (with Quarrington's) was recorded as £4 10s 4 1/2d, slightly below average for its wapentake (Aswardhurn). It is listed as a hamlet of Quarrington. {5}
This hamlet is also documented, as Milnethorpe, in the 13th century. Several suggestions have been made regarding its location. It has been suggested that it was situated near to the station, or on land to the west of London Road near to Quarrington. It has also been recently proposed that it was located astride London Road at the south edge of Quarrington parish where a small group of roadside enclosures were shown on the 1794 Enclosure plan. {6}{7}
