Full Description

PRN 65237 Mid 19th century drill hall. The original date of the hall is uncertain, but it is unlikely to be much earlier than the first mention of a militia in Sleaford in 1860. The hall is first mentioned in documentary sources in 1882, and first shown on a map in 1889. It was used by the Second Lincolnshire Rifle Volunteer Corps (Company E). An earlier militia, the Eighth (Sleaford) Rifle Volunteers is known to have existed, but it is not known if they used the hall. No original internal features survive, and the function of the rooms is not certain although the large hall was probably used for drill practice and the smaller rooms may have been used as armouries or for storage. The building is now used by several shops and a restaurant, and a glazed shop front was added in the 1970s-80s. {1}{2}
