Full Description

Two large stone quarries, labelled 'Ancaster Quarries', are shown on the 1905 O.S. map. {1} These quarries, which were also known as the Wilsford Quarries, produced the fine white limestone known as Ancaster Stone (apparently due to it having been first worked at Ancaster more than 500 years ago). Many of the churches, mansions and public buildings of the county are made of this stone. In 1856, the quarries were worked by Mr John Wilson. {2} Both quarries are also shown on the O.S. 1st edition map of 1824. {3}
