Full Description

PRN 70591 Saxo-Norman and medieval deposits were encountered during trial trenching. These include a Saxo-Norman post hole, which may indicate the presence of a timber building on site although this is tentative as only a single post hole was found. Cultivation deposits from the 9th century onwards were also seen, consisting of a deep soil layer including dumped refuse e.g. pottery probably relating to manuring activity. An almost complete bone flute, thought to be of 10th-13th century date, was also found. {1}{2} A thick soil of probable 9th - 15th century date was found during a watching brief. This contained a single medieval sherd. It was cut by several possible pits, one containing a single piece of medieval tile, which may have been quarry pits. {3}{4}
