Full Description

Cropmarks of a square or rectangular enclosure were noted in this area of Gayton le Marsh, on the Google Earth satellite imagery layer for April 2005. The cropmarks were thought to be reminiscent of a moated feature, and may represent the remains of a possible medieval moated site. This interpretation is quite speculative, however, and the exact origin and function of the cropmarks remains uncertain. {1} Part of the cropmarks correspond well with an L-shaped ditch or drain feature depicted in this area on the 2nd edition 25" Ordnance Survey County Series map. This suggests the cropmarks do relate to some kind of former water management system, although their exact origin still remains uncertain. {2}
