Full Description

This church with its attached and integral Sunday schoolroom was built in 1877-79, as part of a single large project together with the vicarage, which is some 10m away across the vicarage garden (see PRN 23772). All of the buildings were designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott, one of the foremost architects of the 19th century. The buildings are one of his last works, as he died in 1878 as they were being built. The construction was completed by his son, John Oldrid Scott, himself a distinguished architect. The buildings were designed in an Early English style. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1}{2} The church was the subject of a programme of historic building survey, conducted in March 2007 to inform the building's future use and conservation. Construction of the building began in 1877, with the foundation stone being laid by Miss Charlotte Charinton, a major benefactor of church construction in the Spalding area. The building is of red brick with Ancaster stone dressings, and features a 135ft high campanile tower with a broach spire, linked to the body of the church with a short covered passage. The interior of the church is largely plastered, with subtle alternating banded white and red Ancaster stone dressings. The schoolroom is attached to the choir vestry, at the north-eastern end of the church. It is single-storey, and is of a similar red brick, but features a tiled roof, instead of the church's lead roofs. {3}
