Full Description

PRN 60041 [Note: the map polygon for this monument is very approximate and should not be taken as an accurate representation of the extent of this site.] During the 18th and 19th centuries, "hundreds" of skeletons were found at various locations around the south side of the village. The skeletons were often found close together, with large numbers (up to a hundred at a time) found at a single site. It is remarked that some of the graves were very shallow (only 2 feet below ground) and on one occasion 8 skulls were found together "as if the bodies had been buried in a circle". No grave goods are reported. Local legend links these graves with the battle between Danes and Saxons reputed to have taken place near the village in 870 (see PRN 64065) although this battle is generally considered to be spurious. {1}{2}{3} During a watching brief carried out sometime during or prior to 1999 at a site to the north of Laundon Road and to the east of the church (no further details of the location or date of this investigation are available) a number of east-west aligned burials were revealed. One of the burials had coffin fittings. It is suggested that these (and possibly the earlier finds of human remains?) could be related to the lost church of St Mary (PRN 64870). {4}
