Full Description

The open cast quarrying of limestone for hardcore and building stone has taken place to the east of Outer Circle Drive since the demise of the Greetwell Road mines, and there remains this one active quarry to the east of Riseholme Road. The quarry is known as Cathedral Quarry and belongs to the Dean and Chapter of Lincoln Cathedral. Although the quarries which provided the stone for construction in the Middle Ages were much closer to the Cathedral itself, this quarry was opened in 1839 to provide stone for restoration works to the Cathedral, and material is still quarried here as needed. {1} The 1st edition 6 inch Ordnance Survey County Series map depicts the quarry with an adjacent lime kiln, and it would appear that the quarry was worked for some years for both building stone and aggregate for lime. Later historic map editions show the quarry extending to the south of its original location as more stone was extracted. {2}
